The Koozer-Kuhn Tennessee Marijuana Legalization Bill

By Arline Bradley

A new bill has been presented to the Tennessee House of Representatives. The Koozer-Kuhn Medical Cannabis Act, is a Tennessee marijuana legalization bill that promotes the use of marijuana for medical reasons. Local advocates and organizations have been attempting to make cannabis legal for personal use for decades.

There are supporters on all sides of the issue. In many cases, individuals only support the establishment of a medical program. Others will not vote unless it is for full legalization. Most citizens in Tennessee believe that cannabis need be made available to all whether with or without a hefty sales tax and other guidelines.

Some states which have supported full legalization have created a new era of public discussion. Cannabis and various forms of use are now being discussed in coffee shops, restaurants, newspapers and online in all areas of the country. Whereas for the last 100 years, individuals were fearful of even mentioning marijuana due to the strict laws which many states impose.

Conservative states may never see full legalization like Colorado and Washington which only legalized the herb for personal use a short time ago. Texas has at least signed decriminalization into law though not to support legalization. Rather, to keep young people from spending time in jail and away from other more harmful criminals.

Washington and Colorado, states which have chosen to fully legalize the herb, have created a new wave of discussion in a number of public forums. Many states not yet making cannabis available to those effected by various ailments are now looking at both options. Others are looking at fully legalizing marijuana so as to build a surplus rather than continuing to operate on borrowed money.

There are now twenty one which have legalized marijuana for medical use. As Colorado and Washington are now seeing a surplus with regards to monetary standing, there is no doubt others will follow. As for Tennessee, Texas and other conservative areas, this remains to be seen.

Representatives may very well sign this new bill into law in Tennessee. This is because of an ongoing belief that if cannabis can can cure diseases such as cancer, it can also prevent same. Others remain distant in hopes of full legalization while others remain opposed with regards to both legal and medical use.

There are many lawmakers in both liberal and conservative areas of the United States telling local citizens if it can be proven that medical cannabis cures or prevents disease, votes and views may change. In many areas, this alone is progress. As for Tennessee, only the House of Representatives, citizens and voters have the power to change current laws relating to legalization.

Unlike Washington and Colorado, Tennessee, Texas and other more conservative states may never see the full and open legal use of marijuana. It is believed that a number of remaining states may find a way to make it legal for medical reasons. Many individuals suffering both curable and incurable ailments hope this day comes sooner rather than later.
