By Buddy Vassie

If you love cooking curry-based dishes, you may already experienced just how good turmeric is as a spice, but did you know that it is also used to treat a wide variety of medical conditions? Turmeric -curcumin extract is known for its anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and antioxidant properties, as well as its ability to help fight cancer. This extract is available in capsule, tablet, and softgel form.

Curcumin is derived from the roots of turmeric plant, primarily by crushing it and having it extracted. About 20 pounds of dry curcumin powder will have to be gathered for a yield of 2 pounds of turmeric curcumin extract. The great thing about this extract is that it is easily absorbed by the digestive system compared to spice turmeric, which means the health benefits is achieved faster.

One of the more popular applications of turmeric curcumin extract is for arthritis. Arthritis is referred to as the inflammation of the joints which can be very painful and limiting. The curcumin extract works by controlling the amount of enzyme known as COX-2 in order to alleviate joint pain. Inflammation is also minimized by encouraging the adrenal glands to release cortisone, a natural steroid.

Since it is an effective painkiller, curcumin extract may also be used to remedy other types of inflammations such as gout, tendinitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches, and bursitis. In fact, it can be a safer alternative to pharmaceutical NSAID's, aspirins, and other pain killers. In one study conducted in Thailand, it was shown to be effective in minimizing the pain caused by ulcers.

For cardiovascular health, curcumin extract can be very valuable due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capabilities. It is also able to thin the blood effectively and this can help minimize the possibility of blood clotting. Many cases of heart attacks, thrombosis, and strokes are due to the clotting of blood. Curcumin extract may also be taken to reduce cholesterol levels in the body.

For skin problems such as athlete's foot and eczema, the extract of turmeric curcumin will do a great job. The same can be said for insect bites, cuts, and bruises. In the digestive system, it has a positive effect on the solubility of bile - this helps to minimize the formation of gallstones. Gallstones are formed when the liver or gallbladder is overwhelmed and then the bile becomes hardened.

Another important application of turmeric curcumin extract is in the fight against cancer. Many researchers have been amazed at its potency against carcinogens. It can effectively prevent a process called angiogenesis in which new blood vessels grow in tumors. And unlike regular cancer treatments, this extract does not weaken the immune system but instead strengthens it as it fights cancer cells.

It is a good thing that turmeric curcumin extract is generally safe as long as it is taken within the recommended dosage. Many of the curcumin supplements sold online contain anywhere from 600 to 800mg of the extract. It is not recommended for pregnant women to take this supplement, while those with health problems such as diabetes and kidney disease should consult their physician first.
