Be Worry-Free With Dental Insurance

By Harry Izzo

Dental care can put a dent in your wallet and so you should take advantage of financing this care through a good insurance policy. The main problem is the limitations of coverage. For example, cosmetic procedures are never covered by insurance. You have to come out of pocket for these expenses yourself. Teeth whitening or porcelain veneers will be paid by you if you are able and willing to commit. Keep in mind that some treatments require significant upkeep and several dental sessions. This will add to the cost of the treatment.

Check with your insurance policy before having any work done. Make sure that you let your dentist know of a substitute treatment you prefer that meets the limits of your policy. Being upfront with your dentist about the cost is always recommended. Agree in advance in an open dialogue so that there are no financial complications afterwards.

Most likely a less costly alternative can be used for treating you. Find a treatment that you can live with and that can fit your pocketbook. Don't forget that some treatments require a recovery period that may cause you to lose work and this will add indirectly to the cost of the dental procedure.

Be aware that different states charge differently for dental care procedures. It is advisable to know what the average cost for dental treatment is where you live. Get in touch with local dental associations in your city to get a handle on the going rates for dental treatment. What a dentist charges is not written in concrete so you don't necessarily have to pay your city's averages.

You may be able to negotiate and get your dentist to reduce the cost of his professional and laboratory fees. You can save a lot of money if he is willing to come down in his prices.

An alternative to dental insurance is discount dental plans and these also vary by state. They also depend on participating dentists in your area, where you can save up to 60% on certain dental procedures. This is a significant drop in the average cost of dental treatment.

If you are on a budget and really desperate, you might consider having treatment done at a local dental school instead. Students welcome volunteer's who help them complete their studies, and the treatment is completely free. The only downside is that students are earning their license so there is a risk that your treatment can turn out wrong.
