What Everyone Should Know About Teeth Whitening

By Harry Izzo

Some people have a perfect set of teeth. They are perfectly aligned, nicely shaped and are healthy. The only thing they are missing is a set of teeth that are white. Smokers, coffee drinkers and tea drinkers are some of the people that suffer from this problem.

Stained teeth can cause one's self-confidence and self-esteem to plummet. Fortunately, cosmetic dentistry makes it easier for people to get the bright sparkling teeth they desire.

The procedure is popularly known as teeth whitening. This is a godsend for patients with discolored teeth. Discoloring results from the food we eat, smoking, your genes or natural aging. Before bleaching your teeth, all major dental issues must be addressed. Before the procedure begins you will need to consult with your dental practitioner to uncover the presence of tooth decay and or gum sensitivity.

If you have any cavities, they must be treated. The integrity of your cavity fillings is important because the whitening solution must be prevented from reaching certain areas within the tooth. Make sure you give your teeth a thorough cleaning to remove any food particles and rid your mouth of bacteria.

There are two kinds of bleaching or teeth whitening procedures. You can take home a customized kit or you can have laser treatment at the dentist's office.

Included in the home kit are a mouth guard and teeth whitening solution. The mouth guard is first filled with the solution and then placed in your mouth. All corners of your teeth should be covered with the whitener for an even color. It will take a number of hours each day, for a couple of weeks, for you to get the shade you want.

Teeth whitening is not exactly permanent. If you keep drinking liquids that are dark colored or keep smoking, your teeth are going to stain again. Your results will vary depending on your habits. So watch that you don't expose your teeth to things that might discolor them.

If teeth whitening is not suitable for your mouth, you can opt for veneers. Veneers can be used to cover up teeth that are severely stained. You have several dental solutions available to you.
