Some Basics On Breast Enlargement Surgery

By Marissa Velazquez

Breast enlargement surgery faced significant resistance from many quarters during its inception a couple of decades ago. Most of the negative arguments came from religious leaders who argued that there was an attempt to interfere with the creation of God. This has, however, changed and today it is widely accepted just like any other aesthetic or medical procedure. Common indications for the procedure include breast asymmetry, pregnancy-induced changes and sudden weight loss.

Just like any other form of surgery, there are a number of risks and complications that you need to be aware of if you plan on having this procedure in future. Common complications include increased risk of infection, excessive bleeding and prolonged pain. Perhaps the most feared of these complications is the development of cancer in the breasts later on. It is still unclear whether there exists any direct relationship between the procedure and cancer but scientists have suggested that mammoplasty makes future diagnoses of cancer a huge challenge.

Breasts are glands that serve a very important function in the body. They are a source of some important hormones that help to maintain the menstrual cycle and the integrity of pregnancy after conception. It is important to see an obstetrician beforehand to get professional opinion on whether or not they should undergo the surgery. There have been some isolated cases of hormonal imbalances following this surgery.

There are two types of implants that can be used. Each type has various advantages and disadvantages that have to be considered while making a choice. Both types consist of an external shell of silicon rubber. One type is filled with elastic gel and the other with saline. The gel type has a consistency that is almost natural and is highly preferred. Unfortunately, it is rather rigid and requires creation of a very large incision. The saline type, on the other hand, is highly malleable and easy to work with.

Mammoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia because it is a major operation. An incision is made just above the crease of the lower part of the breast. Alternatively, such an incision can be below the areola. A pocket for the implant is made in the incision. After the implant has been inserted, the skin is stitched back.

Normally, it takes a couple of weeks for one to recover from the effects of surgery. It is important to ensure that strenuous physical activities are avoided as much as possible during this period. Great care is required when handling the surgical site to avoid aggravating the injury. As long as the procedure is meticulously done, the results are usually very good.

The results are widely variable among patients. Although a good number of people are satisfied, a significant number of them may have a few misgivings. On rare occasions, some people have to be taken in for a second operation due to unsatisfactory results. Gravity and patient age have a significant effect on the final outcome.

The role for a positive attitude in attaining the expected results after breast enlargement surgery cannot be overemphasized. It is important to have a high self-esteem as far as your physical appearance is concerned. As a matter of fact if you have a positive perspective of things you may not need the surgery in the first place.
