Some Information On Varicose Veins Treatment NYC Patients May Wish To Know

By Marissa Velazquez

A varicose vein is a vessel that has become tortuous due to problems affecting valves. If it remains untreated, this condition results in a number of complications. Pulmonary thromboembolism is a condition that is caused by dislodgement of clots formed in blood vessels. It requires urgent medical care in the absence of which it is rapidly fatal. Other complications of this condition include formation of ulcers, infections and phlebitis. There are several modalities used in varicose veins treatment NYC residents should know of.

The condition is said to be very common. It has been established to be of almost equal prevalence between men and women. About 55% of the cases are thought to involve women and 45% affect men. At least half of persons aged over 50 years are thought to be affected. Risk factors that have been identified so far include, among others, obesity, hormonal changes, increasing age, physical inactivity and pregnancy.

There are several important factors that have to be considered when choosing the appropriate treatment modality. Age and general health status are perhaps the most important considerations. Persons that have been weakened by age or disease may not be able to withstand some therapies and this should be known beforehand. Disease severity is also an important consideration. It helps in deciding on the kind of patients that are to be subjected to invasive therapies.

The treatment plan is started with conservative therapies. Compression stockings are a safe, non-invasive choice. These work by augmenting the function of defective vein valves and helping with blood flow. Bulging of vessels is reduced over time. There are three types of stockings that one can choose from; prescription strength, over-the-counter and the pantyhose stockings.

Sclerotherapy is the injection of some chemicals into the affected vessels. It is recommended for persons that have small and medium-sized vessels. The chemical works by inducing formation of scars. As the scars form the vessels are sealed and the irregularity is reduced. The larger vessels may benefit from treatment by a special form of sclerotherapy that uses a liquid. Sclerotherapy is unsuitable in persons that have had deep venous thrombosis in the past.

Surgery is reserved for the cases that are unresponsive to the conservative therapies. There are several types of surgeries that can be performed. One of the commonly performed types is known as ligation and stripping. In this type, the vessels are tied, blocked and removed in their entirety. This is done through an incision created in the skin.

This surgery is a major operation and should, for this reason, be done in theatre. It is usually very safe but a few complications may occur. Commonly encountered complications in the surgery include leg pain, wound infection, bleeding and scar formation. One may need to be monitored in hospital for a few days as healing takes place.

There are several other types of operation used for varicose veins treatment NYC patients can consider. PIN stripping and surgical ambulatory phlebectomy are fairly common. In PIN stripping, a special instrument known as a PIN stripper is used. This instrument is sewn onto the affected vessels and when it is pulled out, it comes out with the vessel. This is a procedure that can be done in the outpatient.
